The Chinese Type 66 antipersonnel mine is closely patterned after the US M18A1 Claymore. This type of directed fragmentation mine is used for defensive and ambush purposes. In the front part are 600 steel spheres embedded in a matrix, with a plasticized explosive behind the spheres. The fragmentation face is convex horizontally to direct the fragments and concave vertically to control vertical dispersion. This type mine is normally command detonated with an electrically controlled detonator. However, it can be activated by a pull or tripwire.
