Description

There are two different patters for this round. In the 1915 pattern, existing high explosive (HE) configured rounds were used for chemical agent fills. The round case itself was filled with agent. Picric acid in the gaine of the fuze was used to open the round. The joint between the fuze and the head of the round was sealed with magnesium oxychloride cement.

In 1917, the 1915 pattern of rounds was replaced by a new pattern of much great capacity. The new rounds were longer and had thinner walls than the older ones and were used for both HE and chemical agent (gas) fills. The increased capacity added to their efficiency as gas rounds. The gaine contained 23 grams of picric acid, the same as the 7.7-centimeter short gas round (Old Pattern) which was sufficient to open the round and release the agent.
