The E91 bomblet had a vase-shape that resulted in a high-drag, aerodynamically clean body. It was 10 inches long and 3.4 inches in diameter. The blunt nose and abrupt circular stabilizer added to the high drag and low terminal velocity. The bomb had an air-arming fuze and was designed for normal clustering in warheads.
The E91R1 3-pound bomb was a modified E91 bomb, which was designed for guided missile use. The tail consisted of four plastic fins protruding from a conical surface instead of the steel tail cup or plastic fluted assembly. The new tail assembly was designed to increase the surface area and thereby obtain static stability at subsonic speeds.
The E91 was used in the E118R1 Cluster, Nonpersistent Gas Bomb (750-pound).
